  5.     As Moscow celebrated the 1945 victory over Nazi Germany last
  6. week, Defense Minister Dmitri Yazov insisted that the Baltic
  7. states had been "liberated" by the Red Army, not occupied, as
  8. the secessionists contend. "We were met with flowers," said
  9. Yazov. But Soviet officials were the targets, of brickbats
  10. rather than bouquets in the three Baltic capitals, which
  11. jointly announced an agreement for the direct trading of their
  12. agricultural products among themselves, cutting out Soviet
  13. ministries.

  15.     ESTONIA. Parliament voted to restore a paragraph to its
  16. constitution that declares the country is "an independent
  17. republic," and to drop "Soviet Socialist" from its name. The
  18. prewar tricolor national flag was hoisted over the parliament
  19. building, replacing the red flag.

  21.     LATVIA. After parliament announced that a transition period
  22. leading to independence had begun, Soviet tanks and armored
  23. vehicles rolled through Riga. Ivars Godmanis of the Popular
  24. Front was elected Prime Minister, and panic buying emptied
  25. stores of sausages and soap.

  27.     LITHUANIA. The Council of Ministers slashed milk and meat
  28. supplies to the Soviet Union by 10% as a retaliatory move
  29. against Moscow's economic sanctions.
